The Miss - No Radio

When this came out I thought The Miss were destined to be among the great undiscovered nouveau noise rock/no-wave bands - like my local favorites The 1985 (of whom I'll probably post something here eventually).

Nouveau noise rock/no-wave?  "Come again," you say?  Well, you could sorta dance to these bands in a quirky sort of way, like Devo, Pop Group and Liquid Liquid.  They were atonal, like MX-80 and DNA.  They had a thick rhythm section driving most of the songs, akin to Jesus Lizard, Craw, Slug, et al.  And some of them actually got kinda big.  Well, Pitchfork big, anyway.  Liars.  Ex Models.  And so on.

The Miss did not get big, but that was certainly not for a lack of recorded effort.  This one and only LP could have easily stood its ground against all comers.  But it never had the chance, and alas here it is on my blog instead.  Enjoy.

The Miss recorded a follow-up EP to "No Radio," "The Ride," in fall 2002. It was never released. Here's a link to it.

Full disclosure: I was the bassist/singer of the Miss. Thanks for remembering.

Your description pretty much nails what we were trying to do - wed tense "new wave" music with that 1990s bands-with-thudding rhythm-sections-sound.

I did some digging around and I have two alternate takes from the NO RADIO sessions. "Q&A Session" and "Thin Black Line." M4A format, but here they are. The versions that made it onto the record were done on an eight track in our practice space. Lo-fi, but we liked them better.

There was a pre-Miss band called the Brogues. Same drummer, same bassist/vocalist, different guitarist. I can post some of that later.

Were you a DJ at WPRB, by any chance?

i was a DJ at WRCT in Pittsburgh from 1990 to 2006, although only during the summers after I graduated in 1993. I'm not sure why you are asking, but there's long been some fondness for Pittsburgh bands at WPRB. Bands that never cracked the CMJ charts would often get heavy rotation over there.

We played WPRB's "back to school" show in fall 2002, and Princeton was the only place that I was conscious of where anyone actually listened to us. Glad to hear we were rocking Pittsburgh, too!

Finally, here's a link to "Semihundidos," an album by the pre-Miss band the Brogues, recorded in 1999-2000.
